This exclusive master tutorial series is one of our best and most popular articles and today in this article we are going to add another tutorial to this series.
Today we are going to share a detailed guide which will help you in making Windows 8 faster and improve your system performance. It'll help you in disabling unnecessary eye candy effects such as shadows, animations, etc. Also you'll be able to disable unwanted programs and services which start automatically with Windows.
So if you want to tweak Windows 8 and want to make it super fast, check out following simple steps:
STEP 1: Apply Registry Tweaks
We are providing a ready-made Registry script in this step which will tweak some settings in Windows 8 Registry to make Windows faster. It'll reduce timeout values, set Windows to automatically end not responding tasks, make menus to show faster upon clicking and tweak various other settings.
Simply download the zip file given in following topic, extract it and you'll get "Registry Tweaks to Make Windows Faster.reg" file. Run the file and it'll ask for confirmation, accept it:
Download Windows 8 Registry Tweaks Collection
The zip file also contains an uninstall registry script to restore all default settings.
STEP 2: Customize System Properties to Disable Shadows and Animations
By default Windows shows many eye candy effects such as animations, shadow effects, etc to enhance user interface. You can turn off these kind of effects to speed up system performance.
1. Press "Win+R" keys together to open RUN dialog box. Now type sysdm.cpl and press Enter. It'll open System Properties window.
2. Now go to "Advanced" tab and click on "Settings" button present in "Performance" section.
3. It'll open a new window. Now uncheck following options:
  • Animate controls and elements inside windows
  • Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing
  • Animations in the task bar
  • Fade or slide menus into view
  • Fade or slide Tool Tips into view
  • Fade out menu items after clicking
  • Save task bar thumbnail previews
  • Show shadows under mouse pointer

3. Apply changes and close the window.
STEP 4: Disallow Unnecessary Windows Services to Start Automatically
There are many built-in services in Windows which automatically start with Windows and always run in background even if the system doesn't need them. You can disallow many unnecessary services to start automatically with Windows to improve system performance.
Check out following tutorial to learn which services you should disable in Windows 8:
Windows 8 Services Configuration Guide
STEP 5: Disable Unnecessary Programs from Windows Start-up
Many 3rd party software add their entries in Windows start-up list so that they can automatically run as soon as Windows starts. Many of those start-up items are unnecessary and can be removed from start-up list to speedup Windows.
Follow these simple steps to disable unwanted start-up items in Windows 8:
1. In previous Windows versions the start-up items list was present in system configuration manager which can be accessed using ms-config command. But Microsoft has moved the start-up items list in Windows 8. Now it can be accessed using Task Manager.
Right-click on Task bar and select "Task Manager" option. Alternatively, you can directly open Task Manager by pressing "Ctrl+Shift+Esc" keys together.
2. Now go to "Start-up" tab and here you can click on the unwanted item and click on "Disable" button to remove it from start-up.

Now the disabled program will no longer run whenever you start Windows. It'll only run if you launch it manually.
STEP 6: Remove Sound Notifications of System Events
By default Windows plays sounds for various system events such as error messages, device connect, device disconnect, command success, battery status, UAC prompt, etc.
Sometimes many of these sound notifications might cause a little bit slowness in your system. If you have a slow computer system, you can disable some or all sound notifications in Windows 8 to speedup your computer system:
1. Open Control Panel and click on Sound icon. Alternatively, you can directly open it usingmmsys.cpl command.
2. Once you open Sound window, go to "Sounds" tab. Here you can click on desired program event which you want to disable and then select "(None)" from "Sounds" drop-down list.

If you want to disable all sound notifications, select "No Sounds" from "Sound Scheme" drop-down box.
3. Apply the changes and close the window.
STEP 7: A Few More Things to Do to Make Windows 8 Faster
After following all above mentioned steps, you should be able to notice big improvement in your system performance. Apart from these steps, you should also do following things regularly:
  • Download and install latest updates using Windows Updates
  • Use latest drivers for your computer hardware
  • Install only necessary software
  • Stay away from transformation packs! Install skins packs recommended by us only
  • Use a good antivirus and keep it updated
That's all for now. If you have any suggestion or query, feel free to share it in your comment...

Bandwidth is usually controlled by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). However, there exists some settings in Windows, by configuring which you limit the reservable bandwidth for your system.

Primarily, Windows reserves the certain amount of bandwidth for its application requirements and operation purposes. By configuring its setting in the Group Policy, you can easily limit the reservable bandwidth. This article will show you stepwise, how to access or open up the reservable bandwidth on your Windows 8.1.

Limit Reservable Bandwidth Setting in Windows 8.1

1. Press Windows Key + R combination, type put gpedit.msc in Run dialog box and hit Enter to open the Local Group Policy Editor.

2. Navigate here:
Computer Configuration -> Administrative -> Network -> Qos Packet Scheduler
How To Configure Bandwidth Settings In Windows 8 8.1 Configure & Limit Reservable Bandwidth Setting In Windows 8.1
3. In the right pane of this window, look for the settings named Limit reservable bandwidth, it must be showing a Not Configured status by default. Double click on the same setting to modify it:
How To Configure Bandwidth Settings In Windows 8 8.1 1 Configure & Limit Reservable Bandwidth Setting In Windows 8.1
This policy setting determines the percentage of connection bandwidth that the system can reserve. This value limits the combined bandwidth reservations of all programs running on the system. By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 80 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default. If you enable this setting, you can use the “Bandwidth limit” box to adjust the amount of bandwidth the system can reserve. If you disable this setting or do not configure it, the system uses the default value of 80 percent of the connection. If a bandwidth limit is set for a particular network adapter in the registry, this setting is ignored when configuring that network adapter.
4. Now, in the above shown window, select Enabled and in the Options section; you could input the percentage for limiting the bandwidth. If you input 0 percent here, you can gain the reserved bandwidth reserved by the system.UPDATE: Do read the note below.
Click Apply followed by OK then. You may now close the Local Group Policy Editor and reboot the system with gained bandwidth.
Hope you find the tip useful!
NOTE BY ADMIN posted on 09 Jan 2014:
The claim that Windows always reserves a percentage of the available bandwidth for QoS is  incorrect. One hundred percent of the network bandwidth is available to be shared by all programs, unless a program specifically requests priority bandwidth. This “reserved” bandwidth is still available to other programs unless the requesting program is sending data. If the program that reserved the bandwidth is not sending sufficient data to use it, the unused part of the reserved bandwidth is available for other data flows on the same host, says KB316666.
So what will happen if you change the limit of the reservable bandwidth to zero?
Here is what Microsoft has to say:
The Windows Operating System reserves a fixed percentage of the total Internet bandwidth for the QOS or Quality of Service usage like Windows update, license renewal, etc. Thus, when you limit the Reservable Bandwidth of the operating system to 0, this will definitely affect the operating system activities like Automatic Windows Updates. If a QoS-aware application reserves more bandwidth than it uses, then the unused, reserved bandwidth is available for use by other applications. The reservation does not ensure that the bandwidth will be available to the QoS-aware application because applications that are not QoS-aware might consume too much bandwidth.
